Australia's oldest theatre interior. The Theatre Royal Hobart is the oldest exterior, but that was gutted by fire in the early 1980s and completely rebuilt inside. It is worht noting, however, that both interiors are by the same architect - Willima Pitt - who also designed The Princess' Theatre in Spring Street, Melbourne.

Built as The Academy of Music in 1875 it was substantially remodelled in 1898 replacing a single balcony and flat-floor stalls with a raked floor and two balconies.
For much of the 20th century it was operated as a cinema by the Hoyts group and then purchased by the Royal South Street Society in 1965.

In the mid 1980s the maintenance of the theatre became unmanageable for the volunteer organisation who gifted it to the people of Ballarat. The theatre then underwent a major $5.9mil overhaul completely revamping the stage and adding an orchestra pit, state of the art flylines and repainting the auditorium in heritage colours.

The foyers were remodelled creating better spaces for the public and a new dedicated box office and candy bar.
